I am curious as to the preventitive measures they have in place such as the type of firewall and access protection.

I'm not sure, but I bet they will work on finding a better firewall. I'll see if I can find out anything else though.

Getting a blank diploma at the ceremony is not a big deal. Our school does it so they don't have to worry about everyone getting the correct one and disrupting the pomp and circumstance. They later go to the school secretary to get the official envelope. The honest students here just have to wait a little longer.

I don't know if a newer, better firewall would do anything... the story says they logged in as a teacher...

You can have a big, heavy door... but it won't keep people out if they have the key...

I definitely agree with you. I just wasn't sure if the students hacked in as a teacher or actually acquired/stole a teacher's password and logged in as that teacher.
